Ms. Smith presents a scary thought; scary to me, anyway. To what extent has television so influenced our lives that we see the world as through the lens of a TV camera? Are the stories we make up to understand the world and remember it by 'written' in our heads like they would be if we were to reveal them to the audience of "Two Guys and a Pizza Place?"  I wrote a story and I hated it. And I hated it because I wrote it like a TV show. Linearly. Beginning, Middle, "witty rejoinder" at The End. Easy to follow narrative arc, swoosh, from my fingertips to the Recycle Bin on my laptop. 180 pages of crap.

I love her comment about the "witty rejoinder" when someone leaves a room...

Zadie is spot on... I thing many of us are heavily influenced by television especially when you get good writers - Dexter, Six Feet Under, West Wing, Spaced, The Office, Deadwood etc...
