John Irving is a treasure in my native New England. The guy walks on water there, and rightfully so, with the ever literate A Prayer for Owen Meany. A top writer sometimes, other times--like A Widow For A Year-- a long and arduous slog only for those resolute of mind and fingers.
I do like that he writes and fine tunes the last line first.
I have never experienced a writer than enjoys semicolons as much as Mr. Irving; look for that the next time you read one of his novels. Ten per page, at least.
