Carol singers? Nasty enough for a man of Graham’s Scrooge-like temperament. But the scarlet stains in the snow seemed to deny that, and although the bloke at their head (NOT the one Graham had thrown) looked Biblical enough – long beard and ground-draping cloak – the half dozen followers looked anything but festive – and no, their hands weren’t clasped in prayer but were ... manacled?

And as Graham, draining his tot of Bruichladdich, tried to make sense of the scene, there was a violent banging on the back door and before he could turn his head the terrified tabby reappeared, rocketing though the room from the kitchen and heading for the front door, now creaking open slowly, despite Graham not yet having moved.

The plot thickens. I love the detail of the manacled carolers, too. It's gonna be tough to keep up with you guys.

Highland Park single malts were selling VERY cheaply in Atlanta for a while to try to compete with the known names like Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. Bought some very fine 12-year old Highland Park bottles I do recall. And although I have not yet manacled carolers, don't think it hasn't crossed my mind.

I think you have done a great job Sandra of providing enough intrigue and the opportunity for a few directions with this one. I too like the manacled Carol singers.

In the two years since I've returned from the UK, not a day goes by that I don't sternly reprimand myself for not visiting the Orkneys. I really wanted to go there. Of course between being a student on a budget and having a pub at the end of the road...

Has to be Highland Park for me - for 17 years we part-owned a house in Orkney set between the Scapa distillery and Highland Park ...

Islay's tend to be more peaty, like Laphroig, right? That one took me a while to get a taste for. I do like my Dalwhinnie (sp?) 15, though. Of course now I'll have to track down Bruichladdich to sate my curiousity.

Bruichladdich is an Islay malt -not one I've tried but I liked the name ;-)

Fantastic opening of the narrative (and poor cat!). I'm very anxious to see what comes next.
And what region does Bruichladdich come from? That one managed to evade me, but I keep an open mind (regarding Scotch, mainly, not manacles) ;).
