August 1960. Early closing day and Muriel suggests a ferry trip to Felixstowe. We go for a ride on the big wheel. The man who takes the money goes for his tea, leaving us going round and round, and watching the ferry return to Harwich, us not on it.

Comment by Bill Floyd on November 15, 2011 at 11:06am "Understated" is right. The effect is all the more powerful for it. You picked the precisely right words, and an inspired technique (the dates and the snapshots) to deliver this "shiver of recognition."
Comment by Kristine_ES on November 13, 2011 at 12:38pm your tag wants me to tell you i'm glad you wrote this and posted it, i am sure.
Comment by Sandra Davies on November 13, 2011 at 10:41am Gita - he was quite quickly fished out, but died the next day in hospital. And thaks for your 'under-stated' - reminds me it is a quality to aim for.
Comment by Gita on November 13, 2011 at 9:59am Crikey Moses! Did he die in the ice-cold water? I like the understated manner of this six, offering no big explanation because the facts speak for themselves.
Where do stories come from? That place teresa and Mike and I call "the mound," maybe. But where and what is that mound? It's unpredictable, that's for certain.
Comment by Angela on November 13, 2011 at 9:30am No worries, luv. Again, it was another interesting association you couldn't have predicted.
Comment by Sandra Davies on November 13, 2011 at 9:20am Well done Teresa - this was indeed Tom Sutcliffe, and Angela I did mean to credit you with part of the inspiration for this to your 'Finishing the ride' - apologies for the omission, and thank you.
Was this the gentleman in your family photo sixes, the one who was the big sad reveal at the end? I can't remember his name but his face didn't seem to hold a clue as to his intention. Maybe the intention came later. And as to why you wrote this, maybe it's like the intersections I sit in sometimes and wonder how often our paths overlap, and how much the surroundings change yet nothing every really changes.
Comment by Angela on November 13, 2011 at 9:06am Startling, but interesting how we associate things sometimes. No way to predict when these kinds of things will surface.
Comment by Sandra Davies on November 13, 2011 at 4:43am @ Bob: Last time I went to Felixstowe, nothing happened.
Comment by Bob Clay on November 13, 2011 at 4:29am Not sure what this will do to Felixstowe in terms of visitor attraction. It's put me off.
