The devil blew them a kiss and the young Nosferatu knew it was time to make tracks.

"No way," said Elaa, "were we ready to tangle with that motherfucker. It was like, there was this...man, or something that looked like a man in that alley, and then--this big, yawning hole, inviting us in, and--that's all there was in the world, and just for a second, there'd never been anything else, and it was as if, the longer we looked, if we tried to see it, to...I don't know, figure it out, like, to fight it, control it or something, it would have just...reached, and we'd have been turned into nothing at all..."

Elaa's eyes with these words in that moment--it was as if her life had been sucked from her skull; L'amea took hold of her hand, brought it back.

Elaa stared off a moment or two and then said, "How do you fight nothing...?"

I didn't know, but, just the question...no questions come without answers, and somewhere deep down now I felt a glimmer, as if it was right there in front of my eyes...

Many lifetimes have been spent fighting nothing.
