We found the book. Went straight to the index. Looked up "trick, oldest." Flipped to the page. It read, "Oldest Trick not here - HAHAHAHAHA!!!" We weren't amused.

The modern shoulder tap. I guess this makes it the newest trick in the book.

Perhaps your volume was a reissue. In my book, the oldest trick is of course the very first one in it, The Shoulder Tap. That's where you surprise the person you've crept up on by tapping them on the shoulder on the opposite side (see illustration) For best results, try not to creep up on folks holding large sticks they can use to whack you.
