Grandma Biggerstaff  shouts,” Jenny Sue, I’m gonna serve the turkey soon, please toss some ice in the pitcher of sweet tea?”

Jenny Sue opens the freezer and pulls out an old school metal ice tray with a lever top.

Frantically, she tries to pull up the frozen lever, then chops at the ice with a knife and lastly drops the tray on the floor.

No luck extricating the ice cubes but she has an idea.

Jenny Sue smugly places the pitcher of tea on the Thanksgiving table.

The metal ice cube tray sealed in a zip-lock bag bobs up and down in the pitcher of molasses sweet tea.

No scars and no missing digits this time. Maybe next time.

Cold water does work but so does dropping the tray on the floor as long as you wash the cubes off before anyone notices. No one is the wiser.

Fridges ... with chrome accoutrements befitting the hood of a car... way cool. Now add tires and a steering wheel and we can be rolling smorgasbords.

just wondering if that was really okay with grandma?  sneaking suspicion she didn't like it when she noticed.  but i love this piece - the situation, the characters, and the outcome.

And dont forget the part where your warm fingers would stick to the cold metal.  Ick ick.

Ditto everyone else.  But the key is to run hot water over the bottom of the metal tray with a bowl under it. The ice cubes slide right out into the bowl.

I've clearly been reading too much horror again lately.  I was half expecting someone's digits to be in the ice tray, thus running a wonderful family summer afternoon.  :/

Very enjoyable.  :)

Those things were horrible. Jenny shows genius.

I enjoyed this greatly.  Salute.

I grew up with these and the fridges Mike spoke of.  I miss them, I think.

And the fridges ... with handles and chrome accoutrements befitting the hood of a car -- pick a car -- in 1959.

I wish I had thought of that!  Those trays are brutal, and I have fought my share of them, too.  Sweet six.
