He rolled over to turn off the alarm and hit a pile of chilly magazines, Playboys, arranged on her side of the bed in the shape of a sleeping body, July's centerfold unfolded on her pillow.

He drank his coffee in the silent morning, an additional pile of back issues at the place where she normally sat.

In the bathroom he discovered the newest one, recently arrived in the mail, with a note tucked beside a red-head with a tattoo on her ankle, "Happy dump!  This month's visual candy for you, competition for me, an unattainable bar, renewed each month."

When he got to his home office, his computer booted up to "Playboy of the day" wallpaper...damnit, but she must have figured out his password.

In his inbox was an e-mail with the word hypocrite in the subject line, and quotes by Chris Hedges and Wendell Berry in the body... and a nude photo of her with the words, "No airbrush available" below it.

The magazines in his bed were still cold and glossy when he turned out the light.

Laughing at Bill...

Joe, you could use a little Wendell Berry...

What a tale! Admit my unfamiliarity with Hedges and Berry leaves me wondering but I don't feel incomplete in the read. Last line, 24kt gold, and "airbrush" sheer genius.

and she puts Wendell Berry in the message!  I am guessing here that  he's all about being natural and off the grid and holistic? Love this. Luh-luh-luv it.

Whoa, this is so cool and weird and imaginative. I feel bad for this poor guy, he's trying to replace someone with an ideal I don't think he really believes. The magazines in the bed were 'still cold and glossy when he turned out the light.' I think he misses the warmth. Great six.

The portrait that is being displayed is interesting, I can see both her and his reaction. Good job!

"No airbrush available".  Says more than I care to convey.

Great story.
