I managed to talk my way into a job as a German translator even though I don't understand the language.   I'd been out of work for close to a year and was desperate for a paycheck, so I lied and said I could translate German into English.   "Ja," I kept saying - that was my little joke.   Ted - the guy who interviewed me; now my only friend at the company - never asked me to demonstrate the skill or take a copy test.   We're in this together now, because if I'm exposed as a fraud, he'll be exposed as incompetent, and we'll both be fired.   (Which doesn't concern me too much; I'll probably quit first - I'm thinking of getting into politics.)

Most politicians are bad translators.
