we sat in the camper listening to the summer morning between sips of coffee.  mike asked if i knew what bird that was calling, and i couldn't say because the windows and door was closed making it impossible for me to hear, and i wore the shame of it all day.

last night i was reading bellyflopped on the bed and he flipped his magazine down and turned his face to the midnight window, and asked 'you hear that?' we hear all kinds of things late at night; gunshots, neighbors fighting, motorcycle accidents, medivac choppers coming to save the people, but last night even after he opened the window all i heard was fading crickets and katydids.

i could not hear the song dogs in a westerly direction possibly taking down some prey, yipping and ooooing. part of me was grateful not to hear the creepy, ice-water sound i remembered from years ago, and part of me mourned.

(thank you to mike handley for the perfect description)

I remember your early pieces and you wrote something about Winter that was WOWmazing. I think different things move us in certain ways and it reflects in our writing. The more we write the better we get hopefully (and you definitely have). Great description here and as a fellow deaf chick I can mourn right along with you.

kristine - there's no if, you are improving and it's fabulous.  secondly - at least yours was for a good cause, i lost mine because of a virus.  this week has been a big one for my hearing.  if i figure out how to say it, i will share.

if you check out the wikipedia definition of tinnitus it says "often a result of Kristine standing at the front rail of too many Iron Maiden concerts, dumbass."

jamie (and the rest of yoose)  thank you for continuing to read and reply to these, and if my writing is improving, it's directly related to the fine people here.

Moody and fascinating.  I like the use of "bellyflopped" and the phrase "midnight window".

What Jamie said!!!

And now my heart aches for you a little.  This morning, very early, 3:30am, I lay in bed and listened to a pair of owls discuss the night's events.

"Listening to the...morning" and "midnight window" and "ice-water sound" are all immediately eligible for theft, I'll have you know. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you are twice the writer you were when you joined this site, and I seem to like each subsequent piece of yours more than the last.

Glad to be of service, Maiden. I might have to borrow "ice-water" sound. Great job!
