The stench trickled into his sinuses, enveloped his brain then was exhaled out with fervour.

The descent was deeper than he remembered, walls covered in lichen and damp with drainwater.

Overground, cars pounded the road with rhythmic intensity. He was just able to point his toe to meet the steel ladder frame, looking so flimsy despite its firm foundations. He was desperate to get this work done, under orders to not return to the surface until it was complete. Looking up to his starting point he could just about see the midday sun peaking past the drain cover, reassuring him that he would return soon.

I think the pictures add a lot, too. I'm glad you helped me take a look at work I seldom consider. Where would we be without guys like him?

I liked the combination of photos and words. Very strong. One teeny suggestion? exhale out can do without the word out. Otherwise grand.
