When we were told to evacuate our town because of the predicted floodwaters, I asked Miss Shelda, who must have lived here forever, if she remembered any other floods in the area.
"It's funny how I don't remember when they opened the spillway in '73, but I do remember the flood of '27. I was just a li'l thing then, but I remember sitting on the roof of Miss Melancon's house where Mama worked. We were just looking out at that muddy water waiting for the boat, and that's when I saw Jesus in the water. It was just a li'l picture that floated by--from some church or maybe somebody's house-- and I turned to my mama and said 'Look Mama, Jesus came for us,' but when she turned to look, a little whirly pool had took it away, and it looked like a scrap of paper floating on the water."
She smiled, squeezed my hand, and left the church where we had been sitting, Our Lady of Blessed Waters.

Comment by Michael Brown on July 23, 2012 at 11:37am Nicely done. Full of flavor and triumph over tragedy without going into gory details. This piece feels like a writing out of of one of those little watercolors you might find done by a thoughtful artist currently residing in NOLa. The one that would stand out from all the ordinary traditional sketches.
Comment by Gita on July 23, 2012 at 11:28am This rolls off the tongue like cajun speech. I love the name Melancon, and I hear it as a soft 'c' not a hard one. Now I want to play Randy Newman's song "Louisiana."
Good writing, Andre.

Comment by Scarlett Rose on July 22, 2012 at 10:10am This is stunning. And intriguing. And has left me wanting to know a little more. Really great character development.
