Olivia discovered her father-in-law's body floating, face down, in his swimming pool. The smooth water was still as a desert. The body drifted imperceptibly toward the pool's humming filter-- as if it were being slowly drawn by some kind of liquid gravitational force. Later, as Olivia recalled that day' scene, she was astonished at how long it had taken her to notice the tan, floating dead man, and to begin screaming Miguel's name into the paper dry air. She screamed, not because she loved or even liked her treacherous father-in-law. Oliva screamed Miguel's name--again and again--because she knew this ghastly sight was not simply a summer's backyard accident.
