He proudly claimed the professional title "Data Analyst", a position he had held now for sixteen years. The insurance firm had paid him ten dollars per hour, first to file the paper forms in their proper place, then to input all of the paper forms into the computer, then to enter new data coming from phone calls. But now, with Moore's Law still holding fast, the internet and voice automation systems hijacked his position.

The higher ups had decided that his last day should be a Monday for some tax reason, and he showed up to work just as he always did at 7:56AM. His routine still intact, he rode up the elevator for thirty seconds, shed his coat on the coat rack by the door in the next fifteen seconds, carried his briefcase to his cubicle against the far wall, and grabbed coffee in his favorite mug just as the clock hit 7:58AM.

What no one expected happened at exactly 8:01AM, when he set down his coffee mug on the coaster next to his computer, took a gun out of his briefcase, strode over to the network server, and emptied round after round into the thing that stole his job.

Thank you, everyone!

Teresa, it was actually your post about losing your precious work combined with my current job (something rather similar to the "Data Analyst" position) that inspired this post. So thank you even more.

I'm wondering if Moore's Law applies to brain evolution at all, if some essential part of humanity is being "laid off" in the process.

I really enjoyed this.  Nice detailing, and I love the ending.  Well written.

Folks didn't  like McCormack's reaper, either,  but it still took over,  and there was little anyone could do but try to sabotage  the damn things when they appeared.  Progess sometimes works, and sometimes it throws people over the cliff edge.  Even while you embrace the technology, you're probably going to be replaced by it very soon.

Good post, not only well-written, but thoughtful, and I'll be thinking about this for quite some time.  Thank you.

Oh, yeah; the modern murder. The thing had it coming.

Easily believable.  Really, we never know what is going on in a person's mind.  Well told.
