The car was packed and all 10 year-old Maggie needed was to get Duchess, her boxer and best friend, in the car before they left for their new home. “Here Duchess, come on girl,” she yelled, “It’s time to go.” Her Mother walked up to the car and told her, without emotion, “We’re not taking Duchess; she’s going to stay here and live with the Watsons.” Maggie stood in disbelief as she began crying uncontrollably for the loss of her beloved Duchess and the trust she would never regain for her Mother.

Thanks for all your comments! This was my first entry and it was a little more than nerve wracking so thanks for making my first attempt a positive one!

wow!! Reminds me of other terrible parents who ripped their screaming daughter from her boyfriend and a home she loved...

Nothing like a kick in the pants to get someone standing taller. Of course, as we stretch and grow, it leaves a lot of empty spaces inside. I'm surprised, considering how Maggie's Mom dealt with this, that Maggie didn't already have a few good-sized chunks out of her by age 10.
