One of York’s main tourist attractions is its bar walls providing an excellent pathway for visitors to walk for miles along the battlements. The stretch between Bootham Bar and Monk Bar is reputedly the most interesting part of the wall to walk along with stunning views of the Minster, somewhere we will be visiting later.
Dating from the 14th century, Monk Bar is the largest of the gateways being a self-contained fortress which now houses a museum devoted to King Richard III, and boating the city’s only working portcullis which was still in use until 1970. On the front of the bar, an arch supports a gallery which includes ‘murder-holes’ through which boiling water and various missiles could be rained down on attackers.
Enough of history for now, as in the shadow of this bar, we will find Monk Bar Chocolatiers and, believe me, they make the best chocolates I have ever tasted. My virtual purse is full so tell me what you fancy and the treats on me!

Comment by Gita on October 19, 2012 at 9:23am I actually emailed the chocolate shop yesterday to see whether they ship to the United States. Alas, they do not :{
Great job.
Comment by Beth Overmyer on October 19, 2012 at 3:58am Indeed! Very interesting :)
Comment by Diana E. Backhouse on October 19, 2012 at 3:46am You don't ask for much do you, Gita? I suppose you would like them nicely gift-wrapped as well!!!
Limoncello it is, Stephen.
Beth, I can take everyone to see King Dick's Well after the tour of Yorkshire. My sister used to live close by, and I did a set of drawings for a shop in Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. No, I didn't know about the human remains that they think might be King Richards. The Dig sounds interesting.

Excellent, Diana. Did you hear "they" think they've possibly discovered Richard III's remains? Just a random aside, since you mentioned him.
Comment by Stephen Torelli on October 18, 2012 at 10:53pm Limoncello please.
Comment by Gita on October 18, 2012 at 4:10pm The murder holes got my attention! And I wondered who built this fortress -- craftsmen who were paid or prisoners or slaves? As for the chocolate, I'd like one each of the following: curacao truffle, raspberry buttercream, orange and lemon buttercreams, morello cherry, bucks fizz truffle and tonka. And to drink, I'd like a glass of very cold milk.
