In The Hands Of Man: Breaking Bread With Eggs And Rice

Kicking her feet merrily against the counter cabinets Claire beats the eggs until they're ready then hands them over to Man of Honor who scrambles it until they're nice and fluffy, adds the microwaved rice along with a pinch of pepper for flavor, then pools it all together in a bowl big enough to feed an army, "You sure she's going to like this?"

Claire launches off the counter and heads for the table where she's prepared the tray complete with a dandelion-filled vase, which she had to pull from the neighbor's yard, "It'd be better if you had vanilla Silk but she'll be happy because we love her."

He takes the mugs with his left hand, using the right hand to balance the tray, before motioning for Claire to grab the second tray and follow tip-toe down the hall.

She's careful not to drop her precious cargo - three saucers, three forks, and three napkins - and nearly makes it to the room without a snigger until he exclaims, "Aw, Christ, I forgot the juice."

She laughs, he chuckles and the surprise is officially over when Tante makes her appearance in the hallway.

Claire doesn't hesitate to drop the tray and spring for her Tante, who kneels down to welcome her, leaving Man of Honor alone with breakfast to reflect on a time not nearly long enough ago when Claire was his son, Tante his wife, and all was right in the world.

This story continues to wind around itself. Not sure how (if?) it will resolve, but you have a fine start on something longer here. Good characters, some intrigue, and lots of heart.
