so i'm chatting with a classmate who's on the bering sea now. we're discussing a fabulous wonderful cool quote on his facebook page, and he tells me that it's hard being at sea, communicating with family. it's easier now, but not so great before...

so, if you wish... what's the message you would send to family and friends if you had to rely on "low" tech iridium satellite... or dial-up internet in the middle of nowhere, where it takes 3 days for an email to arrive... or paper-n-pen, lick-n-stick envelope and stamp... or something sent by horseback in a saddlebag?  what do you need to say?  can be fact or fiction, but have fun with what you'd say when the technology only allows "brief"

I remember when we were blowing bridges in Central America and during our limited time we would write short notes and hand them off to a courier for American mail service: "Hi Mom, doing good. We're having fun and eating good, so don't worry."

"Lonely here. Need 'Girls Gone Wild' DVDs. Food's awful, send Tabasco or A-1? Send Oreos please? Miss you. Kisses--Joe"  This takes me back:  Only on two occasions decades and half a globe away ago, I got to call home on a satellite thing called "MARS" radio. Only had like 2 minutes. And you had to say, "over" after each transmission. It meant thee world to us.

Isn't it amazing how cut off you feel when you can't get (free) internet access on demand!? This is one of the biggest things that bugs me about airports - many want to charge the earth for a hour of being in touch with the world. And to Mum, who is currently on a small island with very limited internet availability...
