I want one of those shakes right now, so creamy and melty and perfect for a scorching summer day. And that was before our family had air conditioning too. And now I don't run my AC because I'm too poor, and it's ninety degrees, and all I want is that cool chocolate shake sliding down my throat. And my hands around that chilled metal container. And to sit in air conditioning on those high stools, and the cooks shouting, and the waitresses running, and the greasy man sitting next to me, and my brother protecting me, and my two dollars and seventy-seven cents in mainly pennies displayed proudly on the counter, and my sister drinking strawberry because she didn't like chocolate, and that peculiar smell of the drugs and the grease.

Or I just want to turn on my air conditioner so I stop hallucinating about the past.

You got the boys excited about the past.  Me too!  I adore-adore-adore old timey places, soda shops, lost-in-time small towns.  There's a place in Rosenberg, Texas called Another Time.  Everything is made from scratch.  The building is about 100 years old.  The seats are wooden benches or antique chairs, tableclothes red and white checkered.  The cooks still yell and there are plenty of greasy men around who farm or work the railroad or just get greasy for a living.  If you ever miss this scene bad enough (which it sounds like you do) come on down to Texas.  We're a little slow...  Great post.  Love the rhythm and longing, like a high speed chase of the past.  Continue on...

I think it flies along quickly enough, even with all the commas, thanks to the and.../and.../and...  structure.  But i do agree on dropping the last 3 words.

Whatever.  This is very, very on.
