Angela
Kelli, Fourth Grade:
I’m the third girl in my family and there are two boys, so someone is forever teasing me and I never get anything new to wear – this year I had to wear a four year old Care Bears t-shirt to school the first day, but nobody said anything about it; I think they remember last year, when that little squirt Steve got a taste of my fist in his smart ass mouth. This year Robin is the prettiest girl in class - her clothes are always nice and her mom braids her hair real cute. So, while she walking back to her desk and looking down at the paper she picked up from the teacher, I slid my foot out into the aisle - and when she tripped over it she went down real hard, bruising her knees something awful on the dingy tile floor. She wouldn’t stop sniveling and the teacher got real angry and blamed Susan, who sits in front of me, because she’s always getting in trouble. Susan cried and swore she didn’t do it, but none of the kids sitting at the desks around us told on me - they wouldn't even look at me. That was very smart of them.

Comment by Gita on March 23, 2013 at 6:51am This is an excellent start. And an excellent first lesson in the cause.
When you watch a child being really cruel or verbally abusive, don't you wonder, "where ever did she learn that behavior?" At home, right? Someone put pain into that little person. How better to expiate pain than to turn it into a weapon against someone even weaker?
Comment by Angela on March 22, 2013 at 10:04pm Hi Deborah - I am writing from the perspective of female bullies. Adrian is writing from the perspective of male victims.
Comment by Deborah Jovan Reed on March 22, 2013 at 9:39pm Are you going to be doing the girls' perspectives and Adrian the boys'? I can't wait to see where this series goes.
Comment by Miranda Buchanan on March 22, 2013 at 9:10pm wow, girl that is a great Character:) and great writing. i loved it
I'm glad you're doing this series A and A. So much gets swept under the rug as boys will be boys, or kids are cruel. But if it happens to you or your own children, it's the end of the world.
Comment by Joey Delgado on March 22, 2013 at 4:41pm Great start to the series. The last line is very kind of terrifying, makes me wonder if she'll ever break out of this phase of bullying or if she'll forever be a sociopath. There is always a reason someone starts to bully, but when does that reason become an excuse?
Great work, A. Great character.
Comment by Russo Lewis on March 22, 2013 at 1:42pm Beautiful character, not her actions but the choices of the author. Neatly done.
