Five Minutes

He entered the cramped office, closed the door, and checked the wall clock; if it didn’t happen in five minutes, he told himself every morning, he’d start preparing for class.  He fished through the junk in the bottom desk drawer until he heard the familiar rattle.  He tried to think of a reason to stop:  Maybe he could learn to love her; perhaps he could bury himself in his work; maybe he’d have an affair, hire a prostitute, do something to push her away.  Wouldn’t work, he concluded; after all, the notes he kept from past lovers, the arguments he made up just so she would leave him alone, the times he told her he wasn’t in love with her – they were all just the quotidian minutiae of married life, as she saw it.  He thought about God, about family and friends, about the concert tickets he had bought two days before, about the likelihood that the Cubs might finally win the World Series, about the finality of it all -- but none of it worked.  He shook the bottle, wondering whether its contents would do the job -- but by then, five minutes had passed; it was time to get to work.
