What can YOU say in six sentences?
I've always sympathized with Katie Holmes; she was a "mini" in Hollywood and here came this mega-movie star who swept her off her feet and into the weird of Scientology and male domination.
She was high on his fumes and out of her mind, long enough to sleepwalk into pregnancy, but that silent birth bit must have been a scary peek into her future; I remember it well.
Things were probably never the same after the baby, but she hoped she was wrong, hoped Tom was right -- he said he was -- when he told her to get with the program, get stronger, get better, get like him; girls named Katie are full of hope.
I wondered what their conversations were like but somehow I knew, I knew he controlled her, told her she was nothing, stopped her, stomped her, shut her out and shut her up until a moment at an Exxon gas pump, where she stared at black and white numbers scrolling as the big tank filled and she fully imagined herself without the little-man dictator; she actually levitated.
When I read today that she's filed for divorce, I felt tremendous relief, then I wondered how many times during their marriage she envisioned life without him, whether she felt terrified for years then numb before the big Super Unleaded epiphany.
She was recently spotted with friends in Manhattan, looking like the pre-Tom Katie, and ten feet off the ground.

Comment by Justine Dunn on July 2, 2012 at 7:16am You've described their relationship just as I would imagine it to be.
Comment by Mike Handley on July 1, 2012 at 11:22am I adore the tag. And Floyd beat me to the couch line. Damn.
Comment by Bill Floyd on June 30, 2012 at 10:43am You will bow before the intergalactic overlords! Your e-meter reading is negative! (And now I'm free to stalk KH again!)
Oh yeah, the piece itself--imagination is the jumping off (the couch) point for most of life's major decisions. But it takes will & resolve, too. Here's to discovering all three.
Comment by Angela on June 30, 2012 at 12:38am "girls named Katie are full of hope". I agree. Katie is a most optimistic name. I pride myself on being a tolerant liberal, but that Scientology is so fucking bogus I just cannot believe it still exists. Glad for her. Good six, T.
Comment by Robert Crisman on June 29, 2012 at 8:07pm He's too short for her anyway.
