I just had the shit scared out of me. I can't get in touch with my family. They all have cell phones and portables.

5.8 EARTHQUAKE HITS VIRGINIA, EAST COAST

A 5.8 earthquake originating in Virginia was felt in Washington, New York City and North Carolina this afternoon. The quake was centered northwest of Richmond, 3.7 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey

Now we wait for after shocks.

Don't laugh at us California, it's our first.

Well......since Congress is off for the summer, we can't blame this one on them, though their damage report was far greater.

Diana, many people here that were in motion didn't feel it either. We have had two minor after shocks that I have felt so far.

My heart goes out to any of you who are caught up in the eathquakes and hurricanes. Our niece and her family in NZ were badly effected by the Christchurch earthquakes, but all lived to tell the tale, TG.

We have experienced one or two aftershocks from minor earthquakes in the UK. The one I remember most was during the night. The only way I can describe it is that it was as if a ghost aeroplane flew in by the window and out through the opposite wall. My husband didn't wake and didn't believe me when I told him that I suspected an earth tremour until the next morning when the reports appeared on the news.

They are saying that Hurricane Irene will affect the Chesapeake Bay area and the areas to the southeast of that. But wind speeds are estimated to be below 100 mph. Is that any consolation?

I am glad your family is mostly checked in.    It has been interesting here talking with people who felt it for whom it was their first earthquake shake.  It is definitely a weird feeling to have the ground moving beneath you.   Fortunately there don't seem to be any reports out there yet of people getting hurt.

Geologically, I am glad that we seem to be moving in the direction of aftershocks.  Initially there was some concern that this might be a foreshock with something bigger to come, but I haven't heard more about that since the first comments by Marcia McNutt (USGS Director).   I will be curious to see the fault line they associate with this.

I have now heard from all but three of my family.

@Payam God Bless you. :) That one was enough for me. We have had two slight after shocks so far.

@ Bill, haha (Paul Anka)

@ Bill Floyd, you just described it well.

Now you know how it feels to live in my state. I am glad you ok.

Hope you're doing ok. I've been through a couple up here, the last one in '98, and there's nothing funny about standing in a parking lot and feeling the earth move sideways this way and that. Nothing scarier than an earthquake, except maybe Paul Anka.
