As young children, one of the first things we instinctively learn is the urgent need to please our parents. We try to do right the best way we know, and we long to see their nod or pat of approval. Even as adults, this need to want to please our parents sticks with us but only now in a different way. Older and wiser, now we know that back then they really did know best when we thought they knew nothing at all. However, we also know that it is okay now to believe differently than they, because now we have had plenty of time to form our own opinions about things in life. No matter how old I get though, it still absolutely breaks my heart to know he doesn't accept the fact that I am a gay woman; his disappointment a lump in my throat that I can't bare to swallow.

Hopefully someone who reads this is the parent of a gay child, who needs the right perspective.  Well done.
