Timmy stood looking up at Kurt on the pier, both their mouths open in total denial. It was summertime, school had been out for three days now, they had come to the pier to hang out, look for dead fish, throw rocks at the birds, search for buried treasure, things boys do at the beach. As they scoured the area for opportunities the sun peaked up over the low tide ocean waves and gave notice of some shiny treasure twinkling, begging to be discovered down in the sand below. Timmy jumped down off the six foot high pier and grabbed for it; Kurt on his knees leaned over to see what was found. “I think its a ninja sword,” Timmy said "how cool is this“, as he swung it over his head pretending to lop off the head of some unsuspecting foe. Thump, the blade hit the edge of the pier, Kurt’s little finger fell right into the sea.

It didn't occur to me at 5am as I wrote this, but as a very young teenager on the farm I almost removed my cousin's fingertip with a shovel.  Only the glove he had on saved it from permanent damage.

Meh, what's a little finger between ninja pirates? Much is sacrificed in the search for treasure.
