I wonder what it's like to have wings. To, the instant the barbed snare of fear cinches around my belly, open my wings and soar above it. Above sounds and lights and reaching hands. I know what it's like to watch someone draw in a breath and hold it while they inch their fingers in my direction, sure I'll fly away just before they make contact. But if I had wings, if I could move a little faster, I'd wait a little longer. Let them get a little closer before the hum inside my rib cage begins to hammer and forces my muscles into retreat.

letting them get in a little closer and not flying away is the trick, isn't it?

also liked "rib cages begins to hammer."  those poor little creatures i don't know how they don't vibrate themselves to pieces what with the speed of their hearts and all.

thanks! i had trouble with post-partum anxiety and panic attacks for about a year after my baby was born, and that's how i know best to describe this gnawing vibration that consumes every thought and muscle cell.
