What can YOU say in six sentences?
She woke up to the sound of the torrential rain. Although tired and frustrated, she rushed went to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee. She brought her coffee to her bedroom. She arranged her bed, lit a cigarette, and put two lumps of sugar in the cup of coffee. The two lumps of sugar dissolved in the abyss of the dark black hot coffee, and so did all her dreams years ago. She returned to the kitchen and brought some milk hoping that the whiteness of the milk would revive her dreams to the rhythm of the torrential rain.

I used the verb “rush” just to show that she was nervous but I think to avoid such ambiguity I would rather use the verb “go.” As for the coffee, the character used to have her coffee black, but she wanted to have her coffee with milk on that rainy day just for a change hoping to revive her dreams.

Comment by Ali Znaidi on July 26, 2012 at 9:03pm Yes , I agree with you Joey. Most cultures in the world put that pressure on the first cup of coffee. For instance, in our culture here in Tunisia when the first cup of coffee is spilled most people see it as a good sign for good luck.
Comment by Joey Delgado on July 26, 2012 at 8:51pm Good six! I really enjoyed the narrarator's hope the whiteness the milk provides will revive her dreams. We put so much pressure on the first cup of coffee of the day, our hopes and dreams for the day.
