A Halloween Story: No Time

Laura called Burke's name but got no answer, so she dragged Theo back down the stairs through the spiderwebs hanging overhead.  

"Those spiders," Theo squeaked, "I think they're severed human hands," but she did her level best to ignore that bit of news as they crept back into the main room where Owen was writhing in place as his face turned purple.

When Laura pulled the straw out his mouth he puked a little and then the first words out of his mouth were, "Help Burke, please."

She promised that they would, just as soon as they freed Owen from the tangle of bungee cords and pulleys mounted on the wall, but he insisted, "There's no time--"

And he was right, because they had only managed to free his left hand from the cords before they heard heavy footsteps coming down the hallway, Flythe returning with Burke in tow, screaming about how brothers in arms were brothers in harm and there was no sacrifice like shared sacrifice.  

Laura grabbed Theo's hand and whispered a promise to Owen as the two of them fled out the front door.

Love that the last promise wasn't specified, and I love the dynamic that you've brought into play between Laura and Owen. This is intense as hell. Sweaty good. Human hand spiders...damn dude.

I hope they beat feet to a phone and dial 911 asap. Although, with you two maniacs doing the writing, I feel like something really baaad is yet to come. I can't stop reading this series. I look for it every day.
