She's been waiting for someone like me, the strong sensitive type who sees the scared, vulnerable girl behind that capable veneer.

So it's a little insulting when she says, "You're a worse trap than the one I'm already in."

This is not how they said it would be.  This is not how the story was handed down.

I reach for her arm as she's turning away, I stammer, "Why are you treating me like the villain, when all I want to do is save you?"

She says, "Exactly."

Poor guy.  The theme reminds me of Sandra Bullock in Hope Floats, her crying about her exhusband, how he used to place his hand on the small of her back when they were at a gathering and how she missed that gesture of soft dominance or protection, whatever it was.  I can relate to that, the sensation of my cheek against a man's bare chest which feels like being saved/safe, even when the "savior" is asleep.  Complicated, really.  No one wants to be told they're being saved or need to be saved, but deep down I think every woman wants to feel that a guy's really got her back, that if the need arises, he'll take a bullet for her.  And some women get over feeling that way...;0)  I've been listening a lot to Katy Perry this week and thought to myself that her woman-on-top messages are the sequel to the Disney Princess tales.  She finally saves herself.

Maybe not in so much jeopardy after all.  Good tale.

A common dynamic, uncommonly told in the fewest possible words.  Great stuff.

I hope this is going into a novel.  I really, really do.  I'd read it based on this six alone.  In those few sentences you made me FEEL both of them.  Wow.
