What can YOU say in six sentences?
Roy Jones, Jr., a man that God would have ducked in the '90s.
A left that would send you to hell, and a right that would put you the second tier under.
And speed--how'd you like to get hit, say, this Wednesday and wake up the week before last?
He now gets kayoed by guys who couldn't have carried his jock strap back when.
Ali, Evander, the great Sugar Ray--that's Robinson, son--they hung on too long and died by the inch from the poundings they took, and now Roy.
And what's left are the roaring crowds' echoes from times when dreams claimed all flesh, a flesh that sleeps now as the bell tolls out ten.

Comment by Robert Crisman on August 7, 2012 at 10:12am You're right, Jones is 7-7 since 2004 and I took out that "every time out." It just sort of seems that way. He's been stopped four times in that span. The last time, against Denis Lebedev in May, 2011, he got hit with a right that bent him over holding his head with both hands, and then with another right that put him on the canvas for several minutes. It was the scariest stoppage I've ever seen. And that win against Gazewski, who took the fight on days' notice, was a controversial split decision victory against a kid he would have eaten in his prime.
Roy Jones might have been the greatest, pound-for-pound, who ever lived. At his best he would have torn Calzaghe up. Now he's a shadow of what he was, but he's still seeking big-money fights, against the Klitschkos no less. That's crazy. He needs to retire before something really bad happens, though it might have already against Lebedev.
Comment by Deborah Jovan Reed on August 7, 2012 at 8:43am i met him. we're from the same city, Pensacola... this was thirteen years ago. he won his last match against Pawel Gazewski this last June... that's the last one i know of. he won his match before that one too. 56 wins, 8 losses... since 2004 he's matched every loss with a win 7-7... eh, still one hell of a career. he was a good motivational speaker then, i doubt that'd ever stop... i just hope when he does retire he doesn't degrade himself with infomercials. maybe take up some more acting roles.

Comment by Angela on August 6, 2012 at 9:20pm Sad to think of how older fighters just keep going at it long after they should stop. That third sentence was rich, and the final one was powerful.
