An old song popped into Frank's contented mind, just a quiet thought at first, then slowly crescendoing until music rattled the windows of his house like the roar from a resurrected jukebox.

The song gave Frank a sick feeling, the feeling a man gets when he's caught in a lie.

His head filled with memories from a night long past, a night that started in an end zone with his arms raised, stadium lights shining down, and ended with his high school flame sinking to the bottom of Lake Arrowhead, red and white ribbons in a mass of golden hair trailing behind her.

The song was everywhere, lyrics like shattered crystal: Earth angel, earth angel, will you be mine?

She said no that night, to him, a champion--nothing more dangerous than scratching at the ego of a champion--so he snapped, just for a goddamned second, and one hard shove almost cost him everything.

It was her who brought the song, their song, and as his mind unraveled, as his heart gave out, he saw his fallen earth angel standing in shadow, smiling as he collapsed to the floor, smiling when he asked her, "Why now?"

Great 6. I loved all those doo-wop songs. But this one made me cry.

"...a sick feeling, the feeling a man gets when he's caught in a lie."  Precise.

My personal freaks-me-out-for-no-good-reason song is The Beatles' "Don't Pass Me By."  Something about that drunken fairground organ sound, sends shivers down my spine every time.  Great evocation of this vibe.

Chilling and well-written.  Love the anger slipped in with "just for a goddamned second".

Reminds me a bit of the movie "Blue Velvet," which managed to make Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" nothing short of sinister.

Yes! 'Earth Angel' always scared me and I don't know why. It came on the radio today and I was immediately filled with the same old chill.

Wasn't there a whole epidemic of teen angst songs around the same time? "Tell Laura I Love Her" and "Leader of the Pack."

She said no that night, to him, a champion--nothing more dangerous than scratching at the ego of a champion. True that.
