What can YOU say in six sentences?
The boy was trusted into my care.
Them that took him came into my own home in the dark of the night pointing their guns and their flashlights and saying I'd best hand him up, saying how it was a matter of respect.
If they kill me now for standing in an open courtroom and naming them for all to know, well by God there ain't nothing they could do to me that would be worse than what they already done. Don't matter that I got to leave this place where I lived all my life, don't matter that my crops will rot in the fields, don't matter I got to go live out the rest of my days in a place that don't know me, a city where it's freezing cold outside and in.
He come up out of that river naked and anchored to a fan blade.
They talk about respect.

it's as much about finding the right voice for this, and the right POV, as it is about anything else. Concise, spare, exact. I am in awe of this kind of writing, and want to weep over what gets done to people for no reason except hate. And they called the Nazis in WWII animals. They got nothing on folks like this.
Comment by Angela on June 19, 2012 at 6:20pm I think allowing Wright to speak in this piece, rather than presenting it objectively, is the best treatment for this story. Your link was also very informative. This is a fine series.
With respect to the topic, I'm wordless. Maybe silence can speak?
There should be a word, and maybe there is one, to describe the imaginary tier of superiority and how far a person will go to prove it is real. Racism doesn't cover it, because murdering the innocent goes way beyond feeling superior to a group. If feeling superior was all there was to it, there would be a greater sense of satisfaction, enjoyed privately. The word must have something to do with a mixture of fear, rage and complete insanity, with viral crowd behavior and blindness. Maybe if we can come up with a word, we can come up with a cure. Powerful post.
Comment by Paul de Denus on June 19, 2012 at 11:36am Powerful voice Bill- that Southern legacy makes me sick- the video holds a lot of power - makes one feel ashamed to be human
Comment by Gita on June 19, 2012 at 10:33am I believe this is the best yet of the series. It has raw power and grabs hold from the very start. Also, there are no wasted words. You made everything count. Huge fave.
Comment by Bill Floyd on June 19, 2012 at 10:30am See Mose speak in his own words here. (Warning: includes a graphic image--but a real one.)
