What can YOU say in six sentences?
They have been each other's canasta opponents for 56 years, and though the tempo of the cards slapping down is slower, the rivalry is as fierce as ever.
Through college, marriages, births of children, and the deaths of mutual friends and relatives, they have remained sworn competitors in this one endeavor. Their arena is a four foot square card table, once shiny and now worn dull from the rub and snap of playing cards.
Each is convinced the other is capable of cheating.
Neither one has yet to do that.
Do not, however, badmouth either one in earshot of the other or you will know the wrath of elderly women for whom a good card game is both a calling and a blood sport.

Comment by Kay Sera on May 29, 2012 at 1:28am I love this SO much. I think I'm the opposite of Teresa; competition thrills me. I love any game, but I absolutely hate to lose, especially to my brother or sister.
love the ending. love the whole piece. and i want this friend. i love pinochle. my whole family does, but finding time to play and having 4 people is always difficult, but i would kill for a friend to play cards with. something about it always puts me in a feisty mood!
It's difficult in these times to have friends as tight as the these two are. This piece made me long to see my college roommates.
competitive... Ha.
I played canasta with my mom and maternal grandmother a couple of times. It was fun but not the sort of fun that sticks. I must admit at the risk of being ousted from this writing club, that loving cards never happened to me. I love no games, really. I'm the opposite of competative. Is it a brain disorder? I'd rather listen to card players tell stories.

Comment by Angela on May 27, 2012 at 3:37pm I can't describe the totally unique state of mind that takes over when I play cards. Love the topic and your two opponents. Gin?
Comment by Gita on May 27, 2012 at 12:04pm I was witness to my grandmother's Saturday night canasta games when I was a small child. I know something about older ladies and cards. For one thing, if you are invited to play, you NEVER show up without a fresh manicure.
