She is sitting at the cluttered table, with nothing in the windows but moonlight and beveled glass, thinking of Mars in the northeastern sky, and Jupiter in the high south near Aldebaran.  Next door, a couple is having a chat by their kitchen sink, and she watches them.  They are clearly visible in the yellow light that seeps out of their window and onto the lawn.  There is a vase of pink carnations nearby, a small bouquet like the one he brings to her every week.  It makes her imagine being beside him as he sits in his chair, his arms circled around her waist and his head resting on her breast.  Wondering what she would do with her arms in a situation such as that, she gets up, and wanders toward her bed - not sleepy, just tired.

the emptiness without a neck to put your arms around, after all that, is palpable and it makes everything feel so sad in this one.  tired, for sure.  who could sleep with that missing?  *fabulous wonderful writing, as always, angela*

I sense an older woman reflecting on a visit from her son- as life winds down

Boredalone.  Definitely not the brightest star in the sky.  The last line captures the the whole of this, the mood.  Like Bill, I like the open end.  Another series?  Living through others?  I love seeing the world through your eyes.

I like the open-ended way this drops off.  Wondering what she'd do with her arms infuses it with doubt and a million options.

"not sleepy, just tired". .., and what an amazing eye you have.

Loneliness...

You show the gentleness  of a contented  domesticity but you also introduce a thread of doubt:  the sameness of the weekly bouquet (carnations constantly?) and the matter of one's arms. Aldebaran is new to me, so thank you for that.

Well captured snapshot moment.  Loved the line, "Not sleepy, just tired."

Beautiful writing.  I think most of us try, at one time or another, to put ourselves in someone else's place--a better place than we have known or no longer know.
