Two Skies

By the chill and the turn of the leaves and the fog around his heart he knew that this was the anniversary of his father's death. He stood and stared at the endless golden plain rolling away from him and his insides were simmering and he decided it best to be alone.

His feet took him into the mountains. He sat on the prow of the promontory his father called tanka ihake, great end, and spoke his questions, but the only answer he received was that there were two skies - the…

Isabella

Only a ribbon of flame lying atop the hills to the west, then the rich blue giving in to the black. Four days had taken him to the edge of the sky and the bottom of his soul, into the midst of beasts, where mercy and quick hands and a fast horse had given him his daughter back.

Mesquite rode the wind through the open window and into her room, the ragged curtains billowing their greeting to the angel recently snatched from this dusty, austere heaven. He laid her in her bed and offered… Continue

Blackballed

"What did you say?"

"Horseshit; Tom Anderson said something really dumb, I don't remember what, and I said Don't give me that horseshit and they all looked at me like I had just stabbed a baby."

A Discarded Thing

He's a discarded thing, a crumpled wrapper from underneath the seat cast out the window, slumped against the wall next to the dumpster snuggling his three dollar bottle into his crotch. How do I recognize him through the chunky bramble on his face? He used to put needles in the carpet just inside his front door and take pictures of his sister in the shower and perform feats of impossible daring on his bicycle and I thought he was a titan. Now he's just a remora on this wall outside the mall,… Continue

Timothy

It was like the morning light had curdled in the bedroom and my face struggled to get it's reflection through it and to the mirror. When it finally emerged, I saw my hand rubbing at the folds I swear weren't there last night and it hit me that she hadn't come home. Maybe that's what happens after all the lies are peeled away and the neglected, furious, alabaster truth is exposed. Maybe sometimes you have to run just to see how far is far enough.

Timothy appeared in the doorway, or… Continue
