Ghosts

For research I read thirty other memoirs, two books for adult children of alcoholics, and interviewed four craggy alcoholics at the Clear Creek club in Kemah, Texas who once knew my mother and her fifth husband, Red.

But I still had a problem writing my memoir because there were gaps in memory and years when various family members were missing or hospitalized, but I recently solved this problem with a wild solution my mother's ghost whispered in my…

Stage Left

I sit beside my father-in-law where my children play with their cousins in the sand, and he speaks in a low voice so his pregnant daughter will not hear, "Why do you think God is letting this terrible thing happen even though I pray for help?"

His daughter stands nearby with her sister and aunts, her belly sixteen weeks full of a child with only a partial brain.

"It's more God's stage than his will, a place where anything can happen, and our prayers are meant…

A Menacing Black Man

Steve Harvey stated in his book Act Like A lady, Think Like A Man that any man who approaches a woman wants to sleep with her.

He also stated that men cheat for many reasons, one being that they can't go without sex for longer than a minute, "He's got to try to feel better some kind of way, and so he's going to get sex from someone if he can't get it from you."

Regarding women choosing not to take men's last names after…

The Ever-Morphing Jesus

There is a picture of Jesus hanging in the guest room, his expression tender and contemplative, as if he is trying to come to terms with something painful; his large eyes stare left, perhaps seeing a memory of someone or something lost.

It was one of few pictures in your childhood home, the first and favorite image of this genteel Jesus which survived generations of depressed drunks on the cross of the every day, the every hour of need.

You always…

Some Assembly STILL Required

I'd considered ordering Anne Lamott's latest book because I love her insights and humor, but I couldn't relate to a story about how she helped her nineteen year old son raise her first grandchild.

Then I was lonely a couple of weeks ago, wondered if I could conjure a love, a twin of Samuel Beam singing Resurrection Fern, until my daughter texted the answer I'd feared, the answer I knew the way mothers just know:  "…

When the Bough Breaks...

You'd never think an M&M could kill you, then there was the Red Dye #2 scare, and though we know cigarettes  kill, $7 billion is collected annually in excise taxes and the cigarette industry is paying states nearly $250 billion over 25 years to wrap up the late 1990's lawsuit settlements so...government can't afford us kicking their habit just yet.

Thalidomide was once a wonderful relief for pregnant women in the fifties, until their babies were born…
