They Were Five

They were five, tiny with high pitched mews and boundless energy, yellow, tabby, gray fuzzy, underfoot and in the way, and too adorable for anyone but the hardest of hearts to actually step on.

The redwood deck was solid kittens, though they were only five... well, six if you counted the mottled calico mother, thin with giving milk, sighing on the old pillow with resignation when they all latched on, sucking her dry once again.

We need barn cats, cats to place…

Update

I am staying away from the social networking thing right now for two reasons: working cows in a camp with no electic (but we do have a fox) and writing this new novel (which is so much fun that I can barely stand it).

I am in my office for a couple of weeks, transcribing all of the longhand pages from a yellow legal tablet that I wrote by headlamp, and then after the ground settles we will go back in to find the final missing numbers.

But, I am leaving poetry…
