We Will Sing

Thank you to everyone who commented on my weekend sixes, and once again, I apologize for posting so many so close together (how many were there? Five? I don't recall...).

This morning I leave all of you for the week, but in a way I carry you with me because as I ride, as I work, as I sweat, as I see cactus wren nests in the prickly pear, as I discover how fat the lizards have become with eggs for spring, as I hear the quail sisters gossiping in the oak brush, as I go to see if…

The Recipe (warning: language)

I used to work at this very cool country bar, only beer, wine and set-ups, flashy jukebox heavy on the Hank and King George, hardwood floors, and fucking GREAT burgers.

The clientelle were 90% working men, greasy, tired, rough-talking, some of them with degrees and high security clearance, a strong love for beer, just stopping by for a cold one before going home to the demands of family life.

I worked the evening shift, 4pm to close, and even after I turned off…

Not Made of Sugar

We changed our plans because of the interactive online weather map that we didn't even see, just heard about via voice mail we listened to in the dark, our headlamps switched off because the moon was so bright, making the glow of the cell phone face look like an afterthought.

The owner of the ranch kindly called to say that our area had a 70% chance of rain for the following day, which for Arizona means, yes, it is going to rain, and would we perhaps wish to change our…

Full Moon

The horses look like veiled women, only eyes and ears above burlap morrals, and the smell of fly spray starts my day, after the coffee.

We named the bull Ferdinand, the one we listened to scream for women all night long as he made his way around the fence until he found the cattle guard and the next morning we found his tracks where he walked over the metal bars, his lust stronger than his trepidation…

Five a Day (plus a message)

I don't know how to tell you about poetry, about a snake in three parts, head buried in a shallow hole, rattles with bloody flesh on the base resting on the windowsill, long meaty body thrown out by the rock in front of the primative cabin, but it went missing in the night.

He came with aggression and got between me and the quad while I was unloading supplies and oh I wish shovels had longer handles, and oh I hate killing, and oh how I needed some good karma after the…

How will I write it?

This book is stretching before me like the trail that goes through the canyon and then up out where I can see the far side but not the hidden pockets where it dips down and around, but that's ok because I know pretty much where I am going and I just keep going there one footfall, one word, after another, keeping a tally of the word count in oil pastel crayon on a marked out sheet hanging in my office.

I just keep going, just keep creating these characters and finding their…

Early Winter

I saw a two tailed lizard on the wall yesterday.

The bats have flown down to Mexico early, and the hummers are tanking up on sugar, preparing to meet them there.

I keep finding piles of acorns hidden beneath brush stacks, tarps, feed sacks and I wonder who is storing them, and why so many?

The air has an edge this morning, a warning, a frission of chill that is playful, gleeful, and yet, tired.

My slicker and my jacket are tied on…

Not a six... and I won't do it again!

I never do this.... but this is an awesome pitch and deserves to be seen.
