Day off

We moved again in January of my first grade year.

I lugged my footstool to my new desk in my new classroom, the footstool my granny built me so that my feet didn't dangle and ache from not being able to touch the ground.

A new girl is intriguing, and the queen of the dirt, asphalt and hot-to-the-touch swingsets took me under her wing, added me to the group of girls who knew how to claim the best part of the shaded concrete for jacks spilled out of cunning little pouches,… Continue

Lucky, lucky girl

Twelve days ago, my laundry basket went out of commission because I left it outside and a caterpillar spun a chrysalis on the handle and that is the kind of thing I notice, just like the bright yellow warbler that came to the feeders at breakfast.

Today a black and silver and blue and gold butterfly emerged from his tiny constriction and I took him outside, still clinging to his necessary prison and we sat on the porch in the sunshine.

While his… Continue

THE SEASHELL HOUSE CHALLENGE: IF ONLY...

The Munoz family moved into their new house in May. They slept every night a deep and dreamless sleep. They held soundless parties with caviar on tiny crackers. They bathed in pearl-ized light, and burned candles instead of bulbs at night. The children were better behaved than they had ever been, doing swimmingly in school. If only the family could get rid of the roaring in their… Continue

About Happiness

I read an article today about happiness, about positive emotions and their roles in our lives.

My journals document my shift from being serious, responsible, and worried, to this... this state of true happiness in the moment, hiking or riding over the hills, finding peace amongst the granite, finding a succlent juicy life that goes up in flames sometimes in the middle of the night.

The judges would say, "But where has a life of happiness gotten you? You have no health… Continue

Noriega's Last Ride

I wish it had been more spectacular or maybe a job that was more intense or maybe that we had had companions, but instead it was a boring, easy day, just the two of us and lots of sunshine.

Last fall I noticed that going downhill was hard for him and he gave to his right shoulder if pushed in the rocks, but we decided that I should keep riding him since otherwise he has to go.

He is a homely little guy, a little pony from… Continue

Feathers

The little brown-headed cowbirds are eating me out of seed in the feeders, and the female goldfinches that are not gold at all are emptying the thistle sock.

I place oranges on nails and cups full of grape jelly in the seed trays, hoping for a glimpse of one of four species of oriole that have been honoring us with their brightness.

Today I saw a Western Tanager and ran out for a better look, muttering under my breath as I refilled the feeders with sunflower seeds for the… Continue

The Scrub JAY

There is a scrub jay at my bird feeder who chases every other bird away.

He is saucy, bossy, awfully audacious.

The goldfinches and the grosbeaks fly away in alarm, leaving the Oreos and the other chocolate to the Jay who "really" likes it.

The only things I think he is scared of are germs so I accidentally drop the sunflower seeds in the dirt.

I try not to make eye contact.

I mean bandicoots and bleach sound a little scary to a country… Continue

Stuff

See, the thing is that I am not really into "stuff," as in, I don't collect roosters for my kitchen, figurines of teddy bears, antique editions of National Geographic, high heeled shoes, black and white cows with bows around their necks, or old fashioned Santas that come out of the closet while someone else does the Thanksgiving dinner dishes.

At one time I did decorate my kitchen in roosters, but I quickly got enough, and settled for… Continue
