Come to my Fire

Come warm yourself at my red-hot fire, and even, yes, cook the jealous food that needs sustain you, because I have enough heat, enough enthusiasm, enough passion, enough love to spread it around like butter, even when it drips down and stains my feet.

The "I" of me is buried and still, burning with the fever of uncertainty, burning for spring, missing the writing that is my lifework, but the outer me pulls up the roots of a dead winter and tosses them over the fence of a fools day coming,… Continue

Review of the Day

Today I cut long stems of pussy willows as the snow fell all around.

Today I read a quote about being kind because everyone is fighting a horrendous battle in some way, and I thought maybe I would have liked to have known Plato... maybe sat on his lap and braided his beard while he spoke.

Today I battled paypal, invoices, the cost of shipping supplies and media mail, found five copies of the book that were printed upside down, made intelligent and not-so-intelligent stacks of…

Animal Totem Challege Winner Announced

This was a very hard challege to judge, and I have to admit to there being a huge difference of opinion amongst the judges (heightened by the fact that he beat me TWICE that night at cribbage).  Because of the difference of opinion, I am going to go into more detail than I normally would about WHY the winner won and why the people of honorable mention are listed.

The winner is :   Michael Brown with "Toppled"

Great writing, great…

My Animal Totem Piece---Prelude to Announcing the Winner of the Challenge

Some of them chose me long ago, even as I recongized that shifts and changes would come, and so I examine the metaphors on a regular basis, find that the garden spider still weaves and spins for food and for love, exposing her creations to the dew and the sunlight, signing them with her own messy zigzag.

The bat still sleeps in the messy smother of community by day, flies and feeds, a misunderstood symbol of darkness, solitary and free in the night, and the beaver still builds…

The Big House Closet

She watched carefully as groceries and people came and went from the boss's house on the hill, and it was easy to watch since she and her husband lived at the bottom of the hill in the caretaker's house and it was her job to clean the Big House once a week whether it needed it or not.

The boss and his new wife (third one since she'd been here) came out about twice a year, often enough to make sure the ranch still existed, the ranch her husband was married to, often enough to forget what… Continue

In Answer to Lit Class... Inspired by Robert Crisman

The clock had lost its meaning, and the night was in the middle when he poured the dregs from the bottle of red, first into my glass and then into his, letting it stay upside down while the last drops dripped.

Between us on the table lay the roughs from several pieces, roughed up some more by my notes and red pen, though he had refused to touch them, only talked and talked and talked after asking me to read aloud, but he listened to what I read like he listens to music, punching the…

Dead Snow (stretching 6)

I smelled spring today, but looked the other way, afraid she'd be shy this early in the year.

I wrote a poem as I lay in the early morning, not sleeping, and you said it is a good poem as long as someone knows me, but maybe with the poem they will know me better?

I dip my brain into

the hot gigantic swirl

of everything--

Lift it back out--

let it…

Fossil Fuel and Floods

"God gave us the gift of dead dinosaurs and all of the animals that died in the flood, and we need the government to let us do more drilling."

He'll be ninety in September, and his eyes get wet when he tells us that this part of West Texas hasn't had any moisture at all for over 150 days.

"He only left eight people alive on the earth, you know," and he gazes down a 7000 year timeline in his head, having coffee with his oldest grandchild, and perhaps wishing for another…
