He's been drinking, and he's getting that black-eyed look. Last time was right after he got laid off, and when he came at us I locked Josey and James in the basement and blocked the door with my body. I sat there and held my arms over my head and took it until I blacked out, but I'd be damned if I was gonna let him hurt my babies. He couldn't recall a time when he wasn't beset. Even his childhood self seemed to have been outflanked by severe judges. She saw herself as a fixer, which in turn allowed her to excuse the messes she made. For a few months they shared the weight, but any fool could see how it was going to end. Soon the only thing between them was a swarm of needles. I'm glad they gave me up for adoption.
