Zomby Luv

You infected my bloodstream.  I stagger after you with arms outstretched, clutching at the emptiness where you fled.  Your bite reduced me to another faceless shambler among the dead-eyed throngs. I am hunger and I am rot.  Your hero confronts me, racking another shell into the breech, and the roar of the blast answers my prayers.  Peace in pieces, deliverance from desire.

Alpha's Big Win

Some people in this world, they just gotta be winners, they just gotta come in first, whether by a minute or a dollar.  Ken Skilling had to come in first by a car length, and besides that haughty bitch had just passed him again, so he didn't bother with a turn-signal when he jerked it into her lane at rush hour, causing a six-car pile-up that resulted in five fatalities, including a four-year old named Mattie McGuin.  Mattie's mama had to be sedated at the scene, her screams carrying all…

Sentimental Autumn Ode # 5,038

Leaves fall, darkness falls, temperatures fall.  You and I fall together, cocooned against an uncertain winter while everything else is simply letting go.  The leaves, yes, veined like us and each twisted into its own fucked and fantastic shape.  Some fall from the very top, up where the branches reached as close to the sun as they could get; others were satisfied to adorn the abundance nearer the roots.  All surrendered in turn now, the rain bleeding them into the very earth.  The trees by…

Topeka

He's been drinking, and he's getting that black-eyed look.  Last time was right after he got laid off, and when he came at us I locked Josey and James in the basement and blocked the door with my body.  I sat there and held my arms over my head and took it until I blacked out, but I'd be damned if I was gonna let him hurt my babies.  The cops came and took him off and we stayed at mama's for a couple days, but she can't take care of all of us.

Audrey said her boyfriend went…

Cross Stitched

He couldn't recall a time when he wasn't beset.  Even his childhood self seemed to have been outflanked by severe judges.  She saw herself as a fixer, which in turn allowed her to excuse the messes she made.  For a few months they shared the weight, but any fool could see how it was going to end.  Soon the only thing between them was a swarm of needles.  I'm glad they gave me up for adoption.
