Grizzly Man & Shark Man

They fall in love with these creatures because they are, after all, beautiful.  Toothed and clawed and black-eyed, wild and awe-inspiring and majestic and aloof.  Problem is, they convince themselves that there's this mystical connection.  The idea takes hold: They have bridged an evolutionary gap and managed to befriend The Beast.  But bears and sharks are not human and therefore immune to such romanticisms.  They might enjoy a plaything for a time, but in the end their prerogative is to…

Existential Threat

A saffron fog blew up from the south.  We lay down to rest in our rooms and our cars and our cubicles.  The dream of being touched and heard.  A few ran screaming in the streets but they were easily tuned out.  Soft.  Some invasions don't require surrender, only the embrace of warm slipstreams that mimic the blood.

There Are No Words

Not for the color of the shredding skies or the parsing light in your eyes.  Not for the conflict or its resolution.  I am rendered mute before you--awed and reduced.  A beggar reaching for an angel's feather that might grace his fingertips on the way to a place where words are neither required nor welcomed.

No way to tell you how you got me all wrong.

When the word is made flesh, and the flesh is weak, then how are we to be restored?

Soul Killing Machines

1. Lies--mine and theirs.

2. Mindless slogans that become so pervasive they attain the status of received wisdom : "Do more with less," "Perception is reality," "No one reads a story for the middle."

3. Grudges/Revenge.

4. Conservatives and liberals who don't realize that their methods render them flip sides of the exact same ugly coin.

5. Every jealous bone in my body.

6. American Idol.

Discography

It was rumored that even the man himself had long ago lost count of how many songs he'd released.  Every few weeks for years and years, a new 7" would pop up in the indie store racks, or a new demo would start streaming on some kid's busted blog, high lonesome melodies dispensed into the great river of information.  Shaky video footage on local cable access channels, a guy sitting in a beanbag with his face inclined to his guitar.  They say he worked nine hours a day in a cubicle and then came… Continue

American Boys

His father named him Running Fast because he never could sit still, and on the eve of his sixteenth season he was sent off into the wildlands to eat the sacred button and receive his vision.

Sam's roommate turned him onto a hit of this stuff called Smite, some designer chemical so new they hadn't even gotten around to making it illegal yet.

Running Fast lay shivering on his…

Bill and Joanna*

Now she dates a comedian and sells out decent-sized theaters while he's still on the road playing clubs.  No one really knows what went on except them and I'm only speculating here because I believe their work will stand the test of time, but it does my heart good to imagine them in some old house in the woods away from everything.  Him writing the best song ever about writer's block ("The Well") out on the back porch while she painstakingly composed inside.  Listening to each other's work,…

Rare Things

Moon rocks and Inverted Swan stamps and Honus Wagner's baseball card.  11:11:11 on November 11, 2011 (except of course that that will happen twice in the same day).  Bowls and utensils and tools that were commonplace among our preliterate ancestors but are now the only remaining items to tell us how they lived out their loves and their lies.  The letters you wrote me, back when we used to write.  The original version.  Time enough.
