Shouted Down, Drowned Out

The arena is massive, its girders receding away into the middle distance somewhere above the rows of spotlights.  The ticket price is out of the ordinary person's range, so the promoters have brought in some wanderers off the street to fill up the nosebleed seats.  Onstage, speakers stride confidently back and forth, projected onto hi-def screens large as continents, but only those seated in the very front rows can make sense of what they're saying.  These select attendees think the show is…

Look Around

Driving home down the country road the meadows and woods were covered in mist and rain, tree branches stark against the grey.  It was so beautiful it hurt, and for a moment I felt like I might turn inside out.  I thanked God I was here.  I know lots of y'all don't believe in God, and that's cool with me, but pause to consider the breadth of wonders in nature or evolution or whatever random weirdness resulted in this brief incandescent awareness.  There's death, yes, and injustice and…

Thug Life

He can't get the car stereo bumped up loud enough to block out his thoughts; instead it's just a lot of noise riding along with him.

The boys from Shaw Projects had disrespected his crew, so he'd crept past their corner to peel some caps back.  He'd let loose with his 9, and he hadn't even seen the little girl's pigtails flying until she was on her way down.

Distant Planet

I wanna live on a distant planet, where the likes of these jagoffs never evolved from the slime.  

Where the inhabitants travel cross-crater through tubes, and the females have appendages that light up when they're into you, just so there's never any misunderstandings.

Where the kids raise themselves, the resources are distributed evenly, leaders are deft and honest, the attrition rates low.  Where they keep all five eyes on the prize and they only get high on…
