The campus was spring-break quiet under a clear sky, and the few remaining students gathered for desultory talks and no particular direction to their walks.
Catkins from 300-year-old oaks and pollen from young pines coated my windshield, turning my view of the world into a jigsaw puzzle of green and gold.
The young Asian man at Office Depot was impatient as I explained what size ink cartridge I needed, but I knew it was because he had to work indoors under fluorescent lights…

The Worry Wart Makes a List on the Advice of Her Therapist
1. I ate giant prawns in clarified butter, tonight, and I think I can feel my arteries clogging.
2. If I move to that pretty cottage with wraparound porch near the electrical power station, will my child be born with two heads?
3. Will radiation from my cell phone disrupt my brain waves or cause the fillings in my teeth to turn into miniature nuclear fission…

A Visit to the Apothecary
Today, stooped, with her hands five inches into the soil, she found happiness.
There was a first, subtle shift as the banked coals within her started glowing.
She tilled a bed for simple snapdragons, pink and yellow, carefully avoiding the jagged leaves of poppies now three inches high.
The passing joggers and stroller-pushing mommies gave only a glance to the middle-aged woman pulling shallow winter weeds between her perennials.
Better that they didn't realize…
