Esteem-Proof Mirror

Designers have created the iPad of bathroom mirrors with access to news articles, weather, and media, though I’d hope for far more opportunity to reflect.

Indeed, if technology were to impose in this aspect of my life, I would expect to be able to see the back of my head in order to know exactly how…

Protean Mirror (a small encounter)

Standing in the untimely April heat, sucking at an e-cigarette—the rechargeable nicotine atomizer widely claimed to make USB ports feel cool amongst their peers and lesser data slots—I notice an emerald slice of a lizard, long as the spine of most literary quarterlies, perched on a brick wall and bobbing its arrow head toward me. …

A Day In The Life

Present to me 250mL of water in a 500mL glass, and I shall declare it half-full.

Indeed, water aside--that which is deemed both necessary for life and that which drowns it--the vessel is undoubtedly halfway consumed with emptiness.  This finite abyss stares back at us through every negative space, not grinning but gaping in amusement.  Rhythmically and silently it snakes into the lungs, delighting in this waltz of expansions and contractions that will prolong suffering and…

On belief, practice, and the intervention of Fate (or Fine’s Disorder)

Religion has long ceased to factor into my life.  The teachings of any group or individual rarely appear to hold more gravity than another, and I cannot concern myself with following the rituals and motions necessitated by such established belief systems.  I neither claim gnosis nor discount the existence of any deity--compassionate, cruel or indifferent, infallible or flawed, singular or plural.  The pursuit of the…

A Warped Holiday Tale (after Bill Lapham)

The snow accumulated on the windows, each crack within the panes accentuated like the swift breaking of an ice-covered lake under an unfortunate traveler's feet. The cat was gone, his resilience amongst mice and rabbits unable to extend into the movements in the darkness. Graham's hand trembled, nearly spilling the last dram of his Aberlour, long-reserved for such a desolate and--until recently--seemingly lifeless evening. Squinting into the shadows with blue-veiled, bespectacled eyes, he… Continue

A delicate balance

I've always been a character in my own productions. In every song I sing to an imaginary lover, the voice is my own. As a cartoon silhouette or the stark-white figure making snow angels on the basement floor, naked to the camera with a broken noose around his neck, I'm there. I speak to friends of loneliness, depression, compulsion and joy, every word thoroughly considered and rehearsed. So many actions and conversations are scripted and story-boarded in advance, some never seeing production.… Continue

A question of 16%

I made it a point to make him uncomfortable--extremely uncomfortable--at random intervals as the need arose. Occasionally I would prompt the conversation when usable subject matter failed to procure itself. I mentioned to him in an almost bored monotone, "A spider got into the house today; legs and all it was about the size of my palm." "What did you do with him?" he asked, face contorted into a topographical map of concern. "I lured him into a bag and let him outside... you know I often think… Continue

Love Song

“He’s a nineteen-year-old, writing as a middle-aged man musing on his final, pitiful years,” I explain to her, my enthusiasm exposing the near-reverence I feel for the piece. She tells me flatly, “It sounds conceited.” I notice a marked conciseness in both her questions and comments, which I disdain and… Continue
