From Tennessee

Back at school, we got those two new male teachers: one was big and athletic and Ivy-League and zipped around on a Vespa and the other was skinny, from Tennessee and spoke like that. Sugar

My best Dominican friend at Carol Morgan was Tony Pou. He was a clown too, and we used to crack each other up. When he was called on to answer a question in class he would stand up and say the first thing that popped into his head. The old teacher didn’t like it, but there wasn’t much she could say.See More

"TBE, i re-read Moby Dick last summer because I was listening to a lecture series on American writers. Getting to know the man behind the novel was fascinating. Then I trudged through Benito Cereno and found myself cursing Melville under my breath."

"I get this. My favourite was John Steinbeck's The Red Pony. I found it at a school jumble sale when I was a kid and must have read it hundreds of times. Funnily enough, I am reading Moby Dick right now. I gave up after a few pages the first…"

So, up to the roof and, sure enough, here comes the Trujillo entourage: big, black Cadillacs, motorcycle cops, huge bodyguards and Trujillo’s white head shining like a star, as he proceeded slowly down the avenue.…
