A quick on-line search for headlines pertinent to the above picks out the following: Toddler drowns in Esporta health club swimming pool; Beaumont baby dies days after falling into pool;Baby dies after left by father in hot vehicle; Two Babies Left Home Alone Die In Fire; and many more.Only yesterday, indeed, the British press reported that a five-month-old baby taken to hospital after his pram plunged into the River Thames. All of us make mistakes that could be fatal if a child is…See More

If I've told you once...

..............................................We nag because we have valid grievances. Yet it does not follow that the people whom we harry will be grateful; they will become defensive, angry and irritated. Nagging is disrespectful and negative and therefore, automatically unhealthy for the mind, heart, soul and body. It sours relationships.Badgering our children to do what (we think) is right is not a clause in the job description for mothers – but discussion and compromise are.It is…See More

The Smell of Rain

...................................................In any case, ichor (“tenuous essence”) is not blood, but an ethereal, transparently golden fluid that was supposed to run in the veins of Greeks gods – a component of ambrosia and nectar too, if you please, and poisonous to mortals.Of course, it’s not only Greek gods that do not have blood as we know it in their veins. Some arthropods - including spiders, crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp, and even some insects such as stoneflies – have…See More

The Boy

............................................This was not the time to offer platitudes. I hugged him, and rummaged in my backpack to get him a tissue. I also drew out a bottle of orange juice, which he gulped thirstily.“Thank you,” he said, with unfathomable pain in his eyes. “Do you want to tell me about it?” “Lean your bike against the wall, and let’s sit down on the kerb, and I’ll tell you!” he said with a quiet authority I could not fathom. I put it down to what I had assumed to be a tough…See More

Mind Games - Murder on Her Mind

“The trouble with you,” he sneered, as he ran his finger along the door-top and flicked an imaginary speck of dust into the sterile dustbin, “is that you are slapdash with the housework.”“The trouble with you,” she thought, as she gnashed her teeth, her blood seething, “is that you’ve got it coming to you, and you don’t even realise it.”Each day, he criticised something in order to undermine her self-esteem; her hair, her clothes; her cooking; her spending; her family... Just when she was on…See More

There will always, of course, be freak accidents; such as the one that happened when a truck alarm went off and the four-year-old’s aunt tried to deactivate it with a keychain remote… and activated the vehicle’s remote starter instead, causing the truck to lurch forward and crush the boy against a metal fence. There are many more ways in which a child can injure himself in the three minutes it takes to go to the toilet, to see who’s at the door, or answer the phone in a different room, just…

This is why I resent it when anyone teases a girl by telling her she looks “like a boy” (specifically not a “tomboy”) or a boy that he “looks like a girl”. Most of us have yet to learn that sexual identity is not necessarily the same as gender identity; of course it makes good gossip fodder to call someone else’s offspring a ‘tranny’ or ‘butch’ or any other demeaning name… This (as well as using the wrong pronouns on purpose), is not an “I was only teasing” issue; it is transphobic…

The invasion of privacy of the Royals has been called grotesque, as well as “a service to readers”. It inevitably harkened back to the hounding of Princess Diana.  Royals are considered ‘interesting’ in the ordinary course of things, and even more so  if they wear sticking plasters with cartoon characters, or if they  go to a gym or purchase sweets from a shop ‘like commoners’. So it stands to reason that scenes that are considered racy would garner a far wider…
