How do they DO that?

Posted on May 28, 2013 at 12:15pm 17 Comments

I’ve just read three books in succession

Picked not quite at random, but certainly without deliberate intent to prove this thing.

Book A had a heroine called Lacey.

Book B had a man called Lacey and a heroine caller Lennie and Book C contains a minor villain character also called Lennie

It isn’t always names;  it’s quite often random references to, for example, a straw basket called a skep, which occur in consecutively read books, but I am certain that such a link…

A rival for Jack Holmes? (Gita's challenge #2)

It was the biggest cock you’ve ever seen.

Probably the first, and I think it surprised you, shocked you even: you hadn’t expected the red fleshy bits, certainly I felt you flinch. You buried your head in my thigh – I felt you quivering, and assumed it was fright. …

In Köln, on Monday

Triangular window.

Fourth floor of a triangular gable.

On the end of a triangular wedge of a not-very-long block.

At the fork in the road.

From where I am sitting, a white marble Madonna is brightly reflected therein, but from where?

Face hidden in stony cloth folds, she shines white against a summer-blue sky.

Took me a while to see that it wasn’t a virgin but from a roof garden, in which stood a white canvas umbrella.

Words of advice (First line challenge)

'The first time you're unfaithful won't be the worst time you're unfaithful.'  Alice had told her that, but it hadn’t been possible to know whether it was meant as good advice or was her way of making sure you didn’t pinch any bloke she had her eyes on.

As if – Alice always went for the the ones with money, regardless of what they looked like, or whether or not they had anything in the way of brains.  Whereas she’d been seduced by, had got high on words, the things he said…

Hey Sandra,

So glad to find you here. My Grandma died a few days ago. I think it finally hit me. So, I'm glad for my friends.

Dear Sandra,

Well, I'm not anywhere as much as I'd like to be these days, but next semester I will rejoin the flow.  I find 6s keeps me going.  I  eat a plate of fiction before I go teach my classes.  Was moved by your last entry.  Will send the response soon.

Miss you,

Dorothy

The test you posted is interesting, and it seems to work. I entered an off the cuff crappy thing into it and said it was flabby. Cut and pasted a 6S and said it was lean.  The right words make the difference.  Sandra, I bookmarked this tool and thank you for posting it.

Thanks for the lovely card, S. What a treat to do such a mundane task as to go to the mailbox, find it and think, "Could it be?" And, yes, it was. Contented sigh here ...
