So is it me or don't I get it? Not too long ago, when a person or thing was not where it should be or couldn't be found, he/she/it was missing. He/she/it didn't just 'git up and go a-missin' (my new and more colorful way of saying missing)... he/she/it was just -- missing.

Wall St. Journal today mentioned a Field & Stream Magazine short-story contest, what can you say in six words. The contest has drawn 466 entries like: "Saw geese. Guns blazed. Dogs fetched." Pretty good, huh? No matter if you are a F&S fan or not, interesting contest.

It all started when I was five. Dad had season basketball tickets and I got to see my all-time favorite player, Number 23, of course, known to everyone as ‘Squeaky.’ He was only 5’8” but he moved through all those bigger bodies on the court like a mouse running through a tea party. “Squeaky”… get it?

I never thought she was ‘cool,’ and neither did dad. Maybe that’s why he left her… emotionally. Then he died. She got a dog, got a job, learned to play golf, laughed more—lots more, learned to live for herself instead of trying to live for him—and failing. He was 47. She is the ‘coolest’ 95, still laughing and loved by all.
