When the world is map, the role of the mapmaker is to make an imaginary one, then live in it. And when everything is catalogued, the writer does the same. A fine idea nicely compacted.

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman walk into a pub. But not at the same time. Or into the same pub. So the joke just disintegrates.

Thanks for the lizardly comments you left in my corner.... I like the idea of 'my' lizard being smart enough to know how good he has it in my yard... funny how I've decided it's a "he". There are several who frollick in the yard... but this one... with his tiny little marking/scar on his left side is the one who always sleeps outside the kitchen window.

Thanks for all the messages of welcome. I was invited to sign up here after I submitted something to the story blog. Not sure why I was invited, though I welcome it, and not sure what happens to the submission (disappears into the ether?). I was asked to post it here. I'd be happy to, once I figure out where I am.

A Very Kind Man

Everyone agreed that Lvev Mendelstam was a very kind man. He kept procedures efficient, using acid instead of bats, even on the worst of the prisoners. Many of them actually requested to be interrogated by Lvev so that they could confess quickly and move on to be shot. The Party awarded him with The Cross Of Dedication and The Star Of Universal Glory. Then came the The Grand Rapture of '56, when kindness itself was happily revealed as a technocratic delusion. Now, everyone agrees, the real night… Continue

Factoids

Every single day, and as a side-effect to other activities, humanity is producing well over a billion very dull facts. Insiders and experts call these 'factoids'. Traditionally, 'factoids' have been dumped and forgotten in filing cabinets, lists, newspapers and cheap quiz shows. Scientists now claim, however, that we're running out of room. If we continue producing factoids at current rates, then by the year 2025 we will no longer have anywhere left to sit down - but we'll also be so bored we'll… Continue

My place in the tree

I can see for miles from my place in the tree. It's an ancient pine, one of thousands on this hillside, with a view of the power lines and the city and the sea beyond. A trickle of sap runs over the knuckles of my strapped hand. I hold on to the elastic branches, feet dangling, surrounded by air and the smell of fresh needles. That trickle will be amber one day, long after the branches have enclosed me, furled and absorbed me, and my sightless eyes shall see no more. And my body will be found an… Continue
